Yesterday was very hot so my daughter forced me to spend time at the pool we share with the other townehouses. She has fun with the kids, many of whom attend her school.
Now I am not one to eavesdrop (continuously)
but I couldn't help overhearing a young man trying to impress what seemed like a new girlfriend, or a girl he was trying to date.
Keep in mind, these two are not teenagers...probably mid to late twenties and equally good looking.
So what method do you think he used to impress her?
a conversation about his car?
nope
pulling out pics of his place "up north" (it's a Michigan thang)
nope
commentary on career?
nope
name dropping?
nope
saying nice things about her appearance?
nope
intellectual banter?
NOPE
bragging on his new boat (another Michigan thang)
nope
suggesting good books or travel?
nope
anything creative?
nope
I won't keep you guessing any longer
but I could tell by the look on her face,
this particular young woman
was not very impressed
with the young man's plethora
of ringtones.

A commercial for I-Pod (I think) comes on...
B-girl
"That old guy is weird."
Me
"What are you talking about! Do you know who that is?"
B-girl
"No"
Me
"That's Paul McCartney!"
B-girl's head tilts to accent her blank stare.
Me
"You know, the Beatles... a famous songwriter...Wings."
B-girl
"Is he related to Jesse McCartney?"
Me
"No. I don't think so."
B-girl
"Then I don't like him."

don't know
My kid is not impressed, and rather annoyed, by my wealth of knowledge, which leads her to constantly ask me questions in her futile attempts to stump me. Of course she can't stump me now because she is only seven. I am quite sure she will think of something by eight.
These quizzes often happen while we are driving for some reason. Out of the blue, and the backseat, come the questions. She may not be able to make me fumble for answers yet, but she sure knows how to make me feel somewhat closer to ancient...
B-girl
"I betcha don't know who Mario is."
Me
"You have got to be kidding...of course I know who Mario is."
B-girl
"I don't think you do."
Me
"Does he have a brother?"
B-girl
"yes"
Me
"Is he super?"
B-girl
"sometimes"
Me
"Does he wear a hat?"
B-girl
"yes"
Me
"Is he a video game character?"
B -girl
"Mom, how did you know?!"
Me
"Well guess what...I used to play video games and
I played games that had Mario in them."
B-girl
"Were those the ones in black and white?"
Me (relatively perturbed)
"No.
They were actually full color...HiFi stereo and everything!"
B-girl
"What is HiFi?"
Me
"Aw, just Forgettabout it!"

everywhere a sign
Are you trying to give me a nervous breakdown?
Why here? Why now?
There was a time when you were not such high maintenance and now just stop and look...
All the signs are right in front of you! If things keep going the way they are I may not be able to do this anymore. After all my concern and care for you this relationship keeps costing me.
I remember years ago when things were good between us. Back then we could live together amicably. Now, I am busting my back at work just to keep us moving along.
There really isn't much more I can say. I have to do some heavy thinking about how I am going to fix this problem of ours or the whole thing will just keep getting worse every day!
It's time to look for a remedy... A brand new friend
The kind that works for me. A younger relative of yours, perhaps. A more environmentally-friendly type.
Let's just face the facts--You and I are meant to end and we need to break it off soon!
I'm not sayin' this separation isn't going to be tough but we have been together long enough.
And besides, Jimmy,
Jimmy GMC from 95,
it just cost me
FIFTY FREAKIN' BUCKS
just to let you
HAVE YOUR FILL!

the Joy of dance
I want to see people dance, and I would like to guess what kind of people they are. I don't want to know the recipe for their pasta.
Mikhail
Baryshnikov
B-girl finished her fourth year of dance last month (I know I have a lot of catching up to do on my blog but I have been sick recently).
Pictured with B-girl back stage is Miss Joy who is the company director. She was also my dance teacher back in the 70's. She is a wonderful human being.
Joy has established an award-wining regional ballet company, Ballet Americana. In her "spare time" (yeah right) she offers an array of dance classes, reasonably priced, for kids pursuing dance or just interested in fun and exercise. The woman is class all the way.
I cannot explain how much positive culture Joy has brought to the "Downriver" area. She serves on numerous commissions and cultural arts committees and seems to have endless energy. She reminds everyone in this area how important the arts are for all us, especially the children. I help her with PR because I love her so much.
My family gave B-girl some flowers and she gave one to Miss Joy. Joy was thrilled and mentioned to B-girl that she was the only person to give her a flower that evening. I thought to myself, this wonderful 70-year old woman organizes hundreds of students into their showcase recitals---she should have buckets of flowers!
"In your Hawaiian Way" was B-girl's theme song because she took Hawaiian dance this year. Here Uncle Rob, Aunt Amy and Sarah congratulate her and giver her flowers after the performance. My family is good about coming to these things every year and sitting through dance after dance to see B-girl!
So dance classes are over (whew) except for one week of dance camp.
For next year, the B-girl has chosen second-year Hawaiian and second-year Jazz, which means two performances and costumes! For some reason, due to our schedules, I don't think she will be able to participate in two classes for very long. Keep your fingers crossed!
I have to add a special shoutout to Aunt Pat who pulled out her sewing machine and took in B-girl's costume and "grass" skirt. (I skipped all the home ec classes so I could spend more time on the school newspaper, so I am not the best at sewing.)

This post has been removed by the author.
Yes, you see this often, right above my comment on your blog.
That is because I comment and run too quickly.
Make a quick comment and move on...to next blog...work...motherhood...life.
Sometimes I click back for review
and discover I have a typo in my comment.
(Lately I can't seem to type correctly in areas with no spellcheck!)
When I see the typo,
What do I do?
Just leave it like that...who cares?
No.
I copy the comment,
Delete it,
Go back to the comment section,
Open a new comment box
Paste the comment
Fix the typo
Save the comment all over again,
and then move on.
I am nowing trying to stop

So here is my first STEP...
